9th December will be the first day of issue of the Pitcairn Islands Stamps titled 'Royal Navy Visitors'. Pitcairn Islands Stamps - the first day of issue9 December 2009 Early this year Alfred was commissioned to paint a series of paintings for this stamp issue commemorating visits by Royal navy ships to the Pitcairn islands. He said it was a very enjoyable project to be part of, with the help of London based maritime historian, Graham Ford, Alfred enjoyed researching about the vessels and learning about the Navy vessels of the era, in particular, during the transition from sail to steam. The stamps are laid out so that all three, 80c value, top stamps line up to depict Pitcairn Island looking towards Adams Town and Ships Landing side, whilst the $2 stamps line up to depict the outline of the island as viewed from the north side. As well as painting the images for the stamps Alfred also designed the date stamp, Mini sheet design, seen below, and the painting for the first day cover.   |
